Types of Washing Machine

Typically, there are two types available, freestanding and integrated. Freestanding units are more common in smaller spaces as they don't take up room. Integrated washing machines are popular with those looking for a more stylish and uniform kitchen. You can also find combination washer dryers on the market. However, a separate unit is usually more energy-efficient. To get the best of both worlds, many choose to combine their washing machine with a separate tumble dryer.

Freestanding

A freestanding washing machine can be plugged into a drain and a socket. You'll usually do best with a 9kg or 10kg washing machine. However, overall drum capacities can differ between 3-12kg with leading manufacturers. Bosch is a popular option with various models.

Integrated

An integrated washing machine is a great choice to achieve harmony in your kitchen design, as the unit stays hidden behind a cupboard door. Correct installation is incredibly important to control noise, therefore a tradesperson is usually required.

Size Guide

Washing machines are designed to fit into a space 60cm wide. Standard dimensions are around 85cm high and 60cm wide. However, you should make sure to check for full technical specifications of a particular model, especially when it comes to the depth, as this can differ depending on the drum size.

Washing Machine Depth Measurements

Drum Size Average Depth Min Depth Max Depth
7kg 54cm 40cm 63.6cm
8kg 57cm 50cm 64.3cm
9kg 58cm 52cm 64.5cm
10kg 58cm 50.5cm 66cm
11kg 52cm 60cm 70cm
12kg 64cm 60cm 70cm

Drum Size

Washing machines come with different drum sizes which will determine how many kilos of dry laundry can fit inside. Drum sizes are directly linked to the running costs, simply because a larger drum will require more water.

Energy and Water Consumption

Energy ratings will guide you on the efficiency of a particular model. A+++ is the most efficient and is usually calculated based on the standard 60-degree celsius cotton wash cycle. If you're environmentally conscious and want to avoid overpaying on your electricity bill, choose A+ to A+++. Water, as well as energy consumption, is usually measured on the standard washing program.

Spin Speeds

Washing machines also come with different spin speeds. This refers to the strength of the spin cycle, designed to remove water from the clothes at the very end of the wash program. Spin speed is important because it affects the dry time of your laundry.

The most common spin speed is 1200rpm, although some models feature higher spin speeds for a better final result. It is worth noting this also adds up to the cost of the washing machine. The spin speed is also linked to the noise level of the machine. Integrated models tend to come with slower spin speeds because they are more prone to vibrations within the kitchen unit.

How to Clean Washing Machine?

General maintenance is important to prevent a mouldy, smelly washing machine. Start by cleaning the detergent drawer regularly to remove washing powder residues and mould. This part of the machine, including the drawer cavity, can get very mouldy and needs to be kept clean for new washing cycles. It is recommended you remove the entire drawer for best results. Use a brush and cleaner to work your way around the drawer.

Next, clean the drum to remove germs by regularly running a hot empty wash, Family Handyman recommends you do this once a month. Run a cycle at 60 degrees celsius that will kill germs and remove unpleasant odours. You can add washing machine cleaner, available in most well stocked supermarkets. One top tip for everyday use is to leave the door slightly ajar after a wash cycle to let the drum air dry. This reduces the damp conditions for mould to grow in. It is also important to clean and dry the rubber door seal after every cycle as water becomes trapped inside and can become mouldy. Simply wipe it dry before taking your laundry out to avoid getting dirt on your freshly cleaned clothes.

Repairs can be avoided by cleaning the filter regularly. The filter is there to protect your pump from getting dirty. You can empty the filter of dirt; refer to the manufacturer's user manual to locate it.

Finally, choosing the right detergent can affect the cleanliness of your washing machine. Powder seems to be a better choice than liquid because it doesn't leave as much residue. For an integrated machine, buy a spare unit door when you install your machine. This will come in handy if you need to replace it after repairs or if the hinges become worn. You will save the hassle of finding another door that matches your kitchen.
