Manhole Covers & Grates

Manhole covers are removable plates that seal access points to underground water, electricity, or sewer systems. They are made from heavy materials like cast iron to prevent unauthorised access and remain secure under pedestrian or vehicle traffic. As they are removable, manhole covers also provide access to the underground systems.

When choosing a manhole cover, it's important to consider factors such as load-bearing capacity, material, and security features, as some manhole cover types are better suited to specific applications. Regardless of the use, always ensure the load-bearing capacity is suitable for the demands of the location and the type you choose is compliant with UK regulations like BS EN 124 and the UK Health and Safety at Work Act.

• Heavy-duty covers made from galvanised steel, cast iron, or ductile steel provide excellent load-bearing performance and are ideal for areas with heavy foot traffic. Manhole covers are categorised by their load ratings:
• A15 – Suitable for footpaths and gardens, with a maximum load of 1.5 tonnes.
• B125 – Supports light vehicle traffic and is used in car parks, residential streets, and driveways. B125 gully gratings withstand up to 12.5 tonnes.
• C250 – Used in urban streets and local roads, supporting loads up to 25 tonnes.
• F900 – The highest classification, designed for motorways and industrial areas, supporting up to 90 tonnes.
• Gully gratings or drain covers offer durability and effective debris prevention, allowing water to flow freely while stopping debris that could cause blockages. This makes them ideal for outdoor drainage systems.
• For a more discreet appearance, a recessed manhole cover could offer an aesthetic solution. Paviour manhole covers are ideal for decorative spaces, as they can be filled with a paving slab, allowing them to match the surrounding pavement.
• For enhanced security, hinged and locking frame covers are ideal. The locking mechanism prevents unauthorised access to the underground system, keeping the cover securely shut.

Manhole covers are often round because the shape evenly distributes the heavy loads applied to them, and their consistent diameter means that if the cover were to rotate, it could not fall through the hole it covers. However, whilst round manhole covers are historically popular, other types are available at Builder Depot.

Manhole cover accessories like lifting keys, electromagnets, and frames simplify installation and maintenance. These accessories help lift and secure the covers, making it easier to handle heavy loads.
