What is engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring is a type of real wood flooring made from a hardwood wear layer bonded to a stable multi-layer plywood or HDF core (high density fibreboard). This construction gives engineered wood the authentic appearance and feel of solid timber while providing greater resistance to expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature and humidity.

Available in a wide range of wood species, finishes and plank sizes, engineered wood flooring is suitable for most rooms throughout the home. Many engineered wood floors are also compatible with underfloor heating systems, making them a popular choice for modern homes.

How to fit engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood flooring can be installed using several methods, including:

  • floating installation, where the boards are joined together over an underlay,
  • full stick-down installation using adhesive applied directly to the subfloor,
  • or nailing onto a timber subfloor.

The most suitable method will depend on the product specification, subfloor type and room conditions.

Many modern engineered wood floors feature a click-lock system, making floating installation a straightforward option. Before installation, the flooring should be acclimatised in the room for at least 48 hours, while the subfloor should be clean, dry and level to ensure the best results.

Can you sand engineered wood flooring

Most engineered wood flooring can be sanded and refinished, provided the real wood wear layer is thick enough. This allows scratches, dents and signs of wear to be removed, helping to restore the floor's appearance and extend its lifespan.

What underlay for engineered wood flooring

The best underlay for engineered wood flooring depends on the installation method and the type of subfloor. For floating floor installations, underlay provides cushioning, helps reduce noise and can offer moisture protection where required. When installing over concrete subfloors, a moisture-resistant underlay is generally recommended, while acoustic underlays are often preferred for upper floors to minimise sound transfer.

Is engineered wood flooring waterproof?

Most engineered wood flooring is not fully waterproof, but it is more resistant to moisture and humidity than solid wood flooring. Its multi-layer construction helps reduce expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature and moisture levels, making it a suitable choice for living rooms, hallways, bedrooms and kitchens.

Engineered wood flooring can withstand occasional spills if they are cleaned up promptly, but prolonged exposure to standing water may damage the hardwood wear layer and core.

However, there are now fully waterproof engineered wood flooring ranges available, including Quick-Step Amato. These innovative floors combine a genuine wood surface with advanced waterproof technology, offering enhanced protection against everyday spills and moisture while retaining the natural beauty and character of real wood flooring.
