Dowels are most commonly used in carpentry and woodworking applications to join two or more pieces of wood together, such as furniture-making, constructing shelves, reinforcing butt joints and traditional toy-making. Due to dowels being thicker and studier than their nail or screw counterparts, they are less prone to breakage and are much stronger and more accurate in making joints in wood than simply using glue.
