What are the different types of radiator accessories?
A radiator extension valve, or radiator connector, is a practical solution for bridging the gap between a radiator valve and the water inlet. By extending the reach of the pipework, it makes installation straightforward without re-plumbing. Ideal for renovations or when changing radiator styles, extension valves allow new radiators to connect seamlessly to a property’s existing pipework.
Radiator pipe collars fit neatly around the base of radiator pipes, covering floor holes or expansion gaps for a neater look. Most are easy to fit by clipping them around the pipework. These accessories are available in various finishes, from chrome to oak, allowing you to match your flooring or decor style.
A radiator key, also known as a radiator bleed key, is an essential tool for keeping your heating system working efficiently. Designed to fit into the bleed valve at the top of a radiator, they allow you to release trapped air from the system, improving heat output and reducing energy bills. It’s recommended to bleed your radiators at least once a year to maintain optimal performance.
Radiator pipe covers (also called pipe shrouds or pipe sleeves) decoratively cover exposed copper or steel radiator pipework. Chrome pipe covers are particularly popular for their sleek contemporary look.
A radiator spanner (sometimes called a valve spanner, tail spanner, or radiator Allen key) is for fitting or removing radiator valve tails. This tool grips the internal notches of the tail, allowing you to replace valves without damaging the fitting or radiator threads. A ½ inch radiator spanner is ideal for removing or tightening radiator screws and valves.
Radiator foil is a reflective sheet or roll that’s placed behind a radiator. It reflects heat back into the room rather than letting it escape through the wall, improving energy efficiency. It’s especially effective on external walls and can be installed without professional tools.
Radiator brackets (also referred to as radiator mounting brackets) secure radiators to the wall, keeping them stable, level, and at the correct distance from the surface for efficient heat circulation. They’re designed to support the radiator’s weight and ensure it’s safely fixed in place, reducing movement and strain on the pipework.
Radiator caps provide a neat, protective finish to exposed radiator valve or pipe ends. They help conceal rough edges, prevent dirt and dust from entering, and reduce the risk of accidental knocks or scratches. They commonly come in white.
How to make a radiator more attractive
You don’t have to replace a radiator to improve its look, as simple accessories can make a big difference:
- Use matching pipe collars and covers to create a seamless finish from floor to valve, hiding any gaps or unsightly pipework.
- Refresh your radiator’s appearance or cover minor scratches with specialist radiator paint. Available in a range of finishes, it lets you coordinate your radiator with your wall colour for a seamless look. Premium options, such as Dulux Heritage Eggshell, can even be used on multiple surfaces, including wood, radiators and pipework.
